Azkals, Volcanoes Keep Philippines on the Sports Map

Sports – it’s not my cup of tea. Even going to the gym is something I dread. But that doesn’t keep me from being quite proud of our country’s rugby and soccer teams, both of which have been making waves here and abroad.

The Azkals have become a household name this year, especially because they have set new records for the Philippines. Okay, it’s probably the Younghusband brothers’ good looks that made the women want to listen to soccer news; nevertheless, nobody can deny that Azkals put the Philippines on the map in terms of world soccer.

The Volcanoes rugby team gives us even more pride as they won the silver medal at the Asian Men’s Rugby Championships for 2011. Despite being newbies – er, rookies, in the sports world – the team made it to the finals and came close to winning first prize. Now, they are preparing to compete in the Olympics. Hurray to our very own rugby team! If a lot of Filipinos will be on the lookout for promotional vouchers and discount coupons for both rugby and soccer next year, I won’t be surprised.
