Lunar Eclipse (Philippines, June 15 to June 16, 2011)
The June 15 lunar eclipse will be visible in the Philippines on Thursday, June 16, 2011. The eclipse will start at 1:24 a.m. and end at 7 a.m. But if you don’t have a telescope and you want to really see it, look at the moon at around 2:45 to 3 a.m. And by 4:12 a.m., the lunar eclipse would be total.
Here’s a more detailed summary of the different phases of the lunar eclipse on June 16, 2011 (Philippines):
- Penumbral eclipse: starts at 1:24 AM
- Partial eclipse: starts at 2:22 AM
- Greatest eclipse: 4:12 AM
- Partial eclipse: ends at 6:02 AM
- Penumbral eclipse: ends at 7:00 AM
I’m actually quite excited to see the moon change color. During a lunar eclipse, the moon won’t reflect light from the sun but the sunlight can still reach the moon indirectly, causing it to change color. It actually turns pink to a really dark red because our planet’s atmosphere will filter out the blue to violet parts of the light spectrum! In the meantime, some other dust particles will make the moon look dark red. How cool is that?
Let’s see the moon and get howling! Share your pictures of the June 16 lunar eclipse by posting the links in the comment section. I’ll be posting pictures of the June 16, 2011 lunar eclipse soon.

The red moon was wonderful, wasn't it? I was mentally punching myself when I realized the camera I wanted to use was with my mom! Argh. But it was a pretty sight. Fascinating, haunting, makes you wonder how many other pretty things we still haven't seen of the universe.
ReplyDeleteYannick, thanks for the link. Beautiful. Is it your video? When I watched the eclipse though, the partial eclipse didn't exactly showed a totally blacked out portion of the moon - parts of the moon were just darkened but still visible.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information. I stayed up all night and got some photos of the lunar eclipse.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a telescope, but I do have a digital camera with 18 optical zoom.
Photos and time-lapse animated image are on my blog post here: http://5uperman.com/philippines-2011/total-lunar-eclipse-june-15th-16th-2011-from-the-philippines/
Good for you if you took pictures. Mine didn't capture the beauty of the eclipse. :(
